Profession of faith

Jesus paid the penalty for our sin by shedding his perfect blood, but it does not automatically apply to our account. We must receive this gift. We must believe that Christ’s sacrifice is sufficient for reconciling us to God. This belief (also called faith) results in a heart of repentance, a turning towards God and away from our sin. God then applies Jesus’ sacrifice against our guilty sentence, enabling him to justly pardon us.

  • Our relationship with God is restored by grace through faith in the sacrifice of Jesus

    Romans 3:24-26

and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood —to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished — he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

    Romans 5:1-2

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.

  • We confess our sins and acknowledge how they have separated us from God

    Romans 10:9

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

    1 John 1:9

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

  • We turn to God in repentance, away from sin/self and towards God

    Matthew 4:17

From that time on Jesus began to preach, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”

    2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

    Luke 5:31-32

Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”

    Mark 1:15

“The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”
